Icorkfloor why Change Over To Cork Flooring

Have you got stone, tile or hard wood flooring in your home? No surprise. For the last century almost every home had one of these types of flooring. But in the last couple of decades advancing technology and new innovations have brought a wider range of materials to homeowners, giving them a variety to choose from for their flooring needs. Newer to the DIY flooring market is a contender who is becoming increasingly more popular. Which one you ask? Cork. Yep, thats right! The wine stopper is now reintroducing its stint as a floor covering.

Wondering what it is about cork flooring that is causing the buzz? There are several reasons. Cork flooring is affordable, durable, easy to maintain and versatile. In addition to all of this, cork flooring is also environmentally friendly, which is something that most other flooring cannot boast of.

Cork is derived from the bark off the cork oak tree. The bark is first peeled off in layers for the production of wine bottle corks. The remaining bark is then pulverized in a machine. Crushed cork nodules are then mixed with a non-toxic adhesive, after which it will be compressed to form a cork tile. These tiles are then used as the base for cork flooring.

The environmentally friendly aspect comes in the fact that no tree is felled. Once the tree is debarked, its left alone to regrow a new skin. Nine to twelve years are allotted to this regeneration before the tree is deemed ready to be harvested again.

The structure of cork is such that it is comprised of tightly packed cells. These cells are filled with air. These air filled chambers give cork flooring some pretty unique properties. One of the properties is insulation against noise and temperature changes. If you drop something heavy on a stone floor, guaranteed you will hear a loud thump. With cork flooring, you wont hear the loud noise as the air in the cells absorbs it. This can be a boon if you happen to be living in an apartment or if you have young hyper-energetic kids.

The air-filled cells also help to keep the temperature in a home at an ambient level. It is a great asset for winter as cork flooring does not transfer cold from the subfloor. As a result you will not need to have the heating set high just to get a room warm enough. This can help to save a considerable amount on your power bills. The opposite is true in summer. Cork does not heat up in sunlight. It remains cooler than wood, stone, tile or carpet. Again, the absorptive (read: insulating) properties take all the heat out of direct sunlight. Even in the height of summer, your floor and therefore your home, will remain a constant, even temperature. No massive swings from day to night time temperatures!

Another beneficial feature of cork is that it is naturally insect resistant so you dont need to worry about damage done by most types of insects. Its the Suberin the natural waxy substance that

Using Online Mood Boards In Your Next Online Interior Design Project

In the event you haven’t heard – which suggests you have not been visiting InteriorDesignHQ.com OR viewing Nate Berkus – Online Interior Design Mood Boards and in particular, Olioboard is big.

Olioboard is really a virtual application for making mood boards as well as a community of creativeand inspiring individuals. Originally custom-made for Interior designers – but now used by everybody – it includes lots of archived images to fill a room. If you cannot find what you are looking for within the “shop” you can always add things to your products from various websites. This can be a great tool for expert designers to use and to show customers what their room will look like. Or simply play with it for your personal creative outlet.

I utilized Olioboard to demonstrate how you can significantly change a room by just altering the color scheme and using some of the same furniture. In case your getting exhausted of the area in your house, you do not need to change everything. And this is how

Since I “made-up” this room, it is a representation of my fashion. I am what you’d call Eclectic-Glamorous, I love glamor but value various designs as well

This mood board represents Retro-Glam. Something I’m not frightened of is color! I love this Graham & Brown wallpaper. I added other colors with the blue from the sofa and the grey from the curtains. The side table and the pillows bring everything together. The coffee table is really a modern touch with stainless steel and the marble top with some greenery-plants are an excellent way to include some color.

The second space signifies how you can be bold with your furnishings but still change the look and feel from the space. Still using that amazing blue sofa, I changed out the wallpaper curtains and furnishings for a more subtle, traditional, natural feel. The curtains are from Anthropologie, I really like the color-it’s a grey/purple which adds a romantic feel. The coffee table, rug and ottoman are the natural elements in the space. The yellow table lamp adds some color and the pillows bring every thing together.

Most people like to buy “boring furniture” aka beige, because it’s a big price commitment and they do not want to get exhausted of it in a year or two.

I do not believe that, this is how you can change the appearance of your room with a BLUE sofa. I added a more traditional grey Graham & Brown wallpaper and changed out the pillows to match this colour scheme. I switched out the side table for a nesting table as well as adding more seating. Using this wallpaper but adding more natural/rustic items still makes this space look glamorous, but more of a nature inspired glam. When changing the decor of the room, it can still be expensive, so you are able to always make it a DIY project. Remember: do not be afraid to get your hands dirty.

The Magic Of Epoxy Flooring

All of us want the most durable flooring. There is nothing unrealistic in this because a durable floor is required. How would you feel if the floor of your home broke down or got chipped off in places every few years? Not a very pleasant experience, is it? You may need to get the entire flooring done each time this happens and this obviously means cost. Epoxy floors could be the perfect solution for you. Epoxy flooring can last you a lifetime and once the epoxy is applied to your floor it will always be there, protecting the floor material.

Epoxy is a chemical that is procured by curing epoxy resin. Epoxy floors are created by applying multiple layers of this chemical on the floor surface. Here you need to know the difference between an epoxy floor and an epoxy floor coating. If you simply want a single coat of epoxy on the floor that is less than two millimeters thick then it is called as epoxy floor coating. If the coating is more than two millimeters then it is called an epoxy floor. With epoxy flooring you not only make your floor look nice and smooth but also protect it for years. Many of the most durable floors have epoxy applied to them.

Using epoxy is like using a layer of protective coating on the floor surface. The epoxy that is used in flooring is a mixture of the epoxy resin and a hardener. These two are mixed to form a plastic like substance that is extremely rigid and strong. The epoxy in use in floors doesnt degrade easily and it also bonds with the surface perfectly, thus forming a layer of protective cover that can last for years. Epoxy floors are so useful that they are used in even the most demanding environments, heavy industries for example.

Epoxy flooring is not very different from a paint job and thus, you can easily do it at home using very basic tools. To understand how to go about the job you can easily use information from the internet. There is plenty of it available online. However, just keep in mind that the job is time consuming and needs some bit of expertise. You do not want to get started and then find out that you cannot manage it. All the time and money invested would go in waste. And since epoxy floors require the use of chemicals you need to be careful about handling them. A much easier solution is to let an expert handle the job. But if you are a motivated believer in DIY just go ahead. This task is far easier than some other ones.

With proper epoxy flooring you can add a touch of beauty to your floor. Epoxy floors can add aesthetics to your floor and also keep it durable for years. And all you need to do for this is to buy epoxy and apply it on the floor surface. It takes care of the rest.

Shutter Hinges That Do More Than Hang Shutters

Shutter hinges are just a necessary piece of hardware to hold the shutter to the wall, right? No so. There is much more to the shutter hinge than you might imagine. A brief look at the applications and style choices should shed some light on this affordable DIY home improvement project.

Styles through the Ages

For many homes now, shutters are simply an aesthetic feature to the home. Sometimes they are used as interior window treatments. But it wasnt always this way. Shutters used to be an important feature in keeping the home dry and safe during a storm.

Exterior shutters were able to be closed from inside the house by pulling a knob and securing a latch. When closed, precious and expensive glass was protected from breaking during strong winds. Such storm shutters are still used, even though their make up has changed dramatically. In parts of the world where there are months of hurricane threats, shutters help protect the homeowners biggest investment from damage from the storm.

The hinges on shutters have also changed. Some are hidden and purely functional. In the past, shutter hinges were made of cast iron and could endure any kind of beating. Reproductions of the styles and materials of yesteryear are still available today to make a home renovation authentic even down to the smallest detail.

The styles of shutter hinges that were most commonly used were the strap style and the Mortise hinges. The strap hinge is a narrow bar type bracket that starts out wider and tapers off as it reaches into the shutter face. Often it would have a spade-shaped decorative feature at the end as well to dress up the front of the shutter.

The Hardware Behind the Shutter Hinges

The Mortise shutter hinge was even fancier. It resembles an N shape as it joins the shutter to the wall surface. These were also made of cast iron and designed to hold up to weight and the pressure of winds. Each style allowed for easy swinging open and shut of the shutter from the inside of the house.

Shutter Hinges with Modern Uses These replica hinges are a beautiful way to renovate in an authentic way. But if you like a sleeker, more modern look for a newer home, then shutter hinges are designed to accommodate that preference. These modern designs can be completely invisible on the face of the shutter. A middle ground option is to use a decorative brass or nickel finished hinge that does show but it not terribly ornate. This can add the dressing of jewellery to accessorize the shutter and compliment the room, while still having a sleek look.

Shutters offer a great alternative to window blinds. They can be made of wood, PVC composite material, or metal. Each has its own advantages and unique look. Wood is timeless, but can be high maintenance with painting. Metal can get dented and look worn. PVC seems to be the best low maintenance and have lasting good looks out of the three material types. Whatever style you decide upon, that look can be further enhanced by the type of shutter hinges used.

Make Your Own Dressing Room Closet

Dressing room closets are really popular in upscale townhomes and celebrity mansions. Closets like this are ornate in style and dripping with luxury. To create one in your home would give you a fabulous place to get ready for your day or that special night on the town. This can be a really fun DIY project that allows you to express your personal style and taste. These tips will help you to accumulate ideas so that you can create the dressing room closet of your dreams.

1) The lighting is very important; it can make or break your closet. Many people choose to spotlight certain areas to highlight artistic features and illuminate clothing and shoes. A chandelier is almost a must! Track lighting underneath the shelves of the closet helps to give each article a special glow.

Windows and skylights are also popular and let in lots of natural light. Be careful not to hang clothes that could get sun bleached in the path of the light. UV coatings and sheers will help to disperse the light so that you dont have hot spots in your closet. Try to use natural soft bulbs over fluorescents whenever possible. They are more pleasing to the eye. You can install a sensor/dimmer switch so that the lights come on to the brightness that you desire whenever you enter the closet. Just another way to make your closet a little more luxurious.

2) The style of the room can be greatly influenced by your choice of closet system or furniture. Many people install elaborate hardwood shelving and line the ceiling and floor with crown molding to give it a regal feel. However, depending on your style, you could get away with an inexpensive system and give your closet a more rustic or industrial theme.

Another option is to use furniture instead of shelves. Armoires, dressers and make-up tables are popular. Chairs, window seats, and ottomans add a nice touch as well. Standing hat racks and mirrors can make your closet feel more like a boutique. Display interesting hats, scarves, shoes, and special pieces of clothing around the closet to create many interesting focal points.

3) The ceiling and floor should surround the room in style. That popcorn ceiling that your closet or room came with just wont do! You can easily knock down the popcorn with a broom and repaint the ceiling. Metal tiles with imprinted designs make for an interesting ceiling. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to install, and come in silver, gold, white or black lacquer, or even copper. They can be easily painted to suit your taste. Some people have an artist come and paint a mural, clouds, mosaic, or other artistic piece on the ceiling.

Rugs, ornate tile work, and hardwood flooring are popular choices for flooring. Stained and polished concrete can look a lot like marble and allow you to personalize the color of the floor. Concrete can also be imprinted to look like whatever you want. Concrete floors also stay cooler, keeping the heat down in your closet.

4) When everything is in place, choose your clothes hangers. There are plenty of specialty hangers out there that can help your clothes look more interesting and stay more organized in the closet. Satin hangers, wooden hangers, chrome metal hangers, and cedar hangers are popular. Choose the clothes hangers that function in the way that you need them to while looking good with your dcor. Your dressing room closet will be a jewel in your home while reflecting your personal style and taste!

Modernizing Your Home With Wainscoting

Wainscoting or panelling, as it is more commonly known, is a type of finish carpentry. Instead of covering walls with wallpaper or paint, you can choose to wainscot instead. Beautiful wainscoting can serve as a great decorative accent to any room and add additional insulation if you live in a cold area. It is also a great way to cover up unsightly parts of the wall.

Wainscoting refers to panelling only the lower section, about 3 to 5 feet of the wall, right below molding or a dado rail. The great thing about this nifty type of home improvement is that you can do it to any part of the house and you can find a type of wainscoting that suits your lifestyle and budget.

Traditionally, hard wood or soft wood is used for wainscoting. A cut of wood known as the tongue and groove (so named because they can be joined to make a flat surface) is normally used for most wainscoting projects. The groove is a slot cut into one edge and the tongue fits right into these grooves, creating a seamless look. This allows for a close fit that gives the impression of a flat surface. If you’re into DIY home improvement projects, this is definitely one of the best materials around for wainscoting.

One of the lovely things about modern technology is that there are a variety of materials available for any homeowner looking to improve their home. Plastic, vinyl and other materials can be used for wainscoting as well. Bamboo is also a great alternative if you are looking to use environmentally friendly materials in your home.

You can even think out of the box and use upholstery or cloth when wainscoting. Budget friendly, pre-made wainscoting can be found in most hardware stores. It really depends on what type of look you are going for.

For those with higher budgets, you can also think of decorative wood panelling, known as boiserie, where carvings or other decorations are placed directly on the wainscot to add an ornamental touch. For the more traditional minded, this can give you a lot of design opportunities.

If you are just looking to make some visual improvements, then faux wainscoting may be the solution for you. This type of wainscoting involves using only paint or wallpaper for minimal work and maximum impact.

You can even wainscot areas of your bathroom with tile or bead board. If you use wood, keep in mind that the wood must be sealed to prevent future mold build up and water damage. Caulking, or sealing the joints of the wood, comes in handy and prevents future problems.

Taking a few precautions now will no doubt save you a lot of money in the long run. You do not want to have to reinstall the wainscoting in a few years just because of problems that can easily be prevented! This is true for any part of the house you wish to panel, especially if you live in rainy areas or experience long winters.
